Fence up, looks FANTASTIC!
La Varenne, translated literally, means ‘the game reserve’, and we see lots of deer.
The garden is set in large grounds. We fence the garden to protect the plants and flowers from the gourmet deer, but leave them access to the orchard and river to the East, and woods to the west.
Behind the house is a quiet single track road, separating the house from woods (taillis simple), and the deer cross to get to the fields and river. The old fence – very old and patched up wire fencing – couldn’t be replaced directly, as the limestone walling (visible under the panels here) is too friable to be drilled.
It’s a long boundary, so we had the idea to alternate the panels to break up the line. Here’s another view from the roadside…..we’re really proud of the end result.
Putting the fence up meant cutting back lots of existing shrubs, three van loads to recycle the larger branches, and three hours shredding the smaller branches to create a tonne of mulch to go on the garden.
Refreshment well-earned! Beer o’clock at La Varenne:) Salut!
